All the pictures in this section were taken by Richard Heidel from 1954-58.

Bob Heidel provided this short biography of his father:

Richard Heidel
1915-1981

Richard always enjoyed fishing, especially along Beaver Creek. He was aware of many of the ruins along the creek and was interested in their origin, but could never find any information on them. In the early 1950's his wife Nelle, a Registered Nurse, was caring for William H. Vodrey Sr. when she became aware of a book , THE SANDY AND BEAVER CANAL, written by R. Max Gard and William H. Vodrey Jr. She obtained a copy of this work for Richard.

Once Richard had read this book, he was hooked. Over the next several years he walked and took photographs along the entire Eastern Division and parts of the Middle Division of the canal. In addition to giving slide presentations on the canal to various local organizations, he was also reading anything that he could find that might provide him with more information about the canal. This research spewed over into an interest in local history, especially the pottery industry in and around East Liverpool.
