Gard & Vodrey's THE SANDY AND BEAVER CANAL gave
the accurate description of the Western Division as having been basically
stripped of its stonework. And there is even less stone remaining
now than there was over fifty years ago when they wrote their book.
But
that doesn't meant there is nothing to see on the Western Division.
No, a trip from the aqueduct embankment at one end to the Mendenhall
Reservoir at the other, with miles of beautiful prism in between
is well worth the time to explore.
The pictures in this section were taken in April of
2004. Some were taken early in the month on the Canal Society of Ohio's
Spring Tour of the Western Division. Most were taken
at the end of the month when Bob Heidel drove in from Pennsylvania
for a five day visit.
This is by no means a complete coverage of the Western
Division, but it is most of the highlights. There were a few things
that the CSO tour could not get us to due to high water or limitations
of where the busses could go. There were also a couple of places
that I could simply just not find on my own, April is a little late
in the season to go looking. Hopefully I will have a guide with me
this coming winter. |
