Lock 54

May 2003 - When Steve Meek and I landed our canoe just downstream of Dam 19, I was armed with the knowledge that Lock 55 was somewhere down channel. But I didn't know how far. So we hiked the channel (something you would not want to do in July or August) and came upon the remnant of this lock. Though we figured that ths must be Lock 55, we hiked the rest of the channel anyway until it intersected the creek again, and we came upon what was obviously Lock 55. Then what was that stone back there, halfway to Dam 19??? It took me five months to find out, with a copy of the 1854 auction papers of the canal and some further explanation from Doug Bacso.
