Lock 27, "Lusk's Lock"

June 2003 - I wanted an overcast day to get a shot without shadows obscuring the channel of the lock. The opportunity finally came in the middle of a very rainy June. But there's a problem with marching off into the weeds to get a shot of Lusk's Lock in June: snakes! Just when I was putting my tripod down, a snake slithered away to avoid getting the tripod put on his head. But he only went a few feet and stopped. My wife suggested smacking the weeds and making noise. My reaction was that irritating the snake wasn't the plan I had in mind, or some words to that effect. Eventually the snake left and I got enough shots to make this image. A snake crawled across the path in front of my wife on the way back to the car. It made my day.
